Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine

I'm trying to convert a VM from VMwareServer2 to ESXi using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client V5.0.0.

The VM is a WinNT OS called client1.vmx I have copied locally in the computer where the converter is installed.

I get the error message "Unable to obtainhardwareinformation for the sleected machine." I've read a few threads here, but so far  nothing I have tried helps.

The main prolem is that as soon as get the error message I cannot continue the process and I am obliged to cancel the conversion and no log can be obtained from the conversion process.

The log I can proivide are those:

Local Settings\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client\Logs

--> (converter.ComputerSpec) {
-->    dynamicType = <unset>,
-->    location = (converter.ComputerSpec.VMwareHostedVmLocation) {

I have the same problem, same failure for old VMware Server 2.0, VMware Player, and VMware Workstation VMs.   VERY frustrating.

Have found a solution, maybe not the best but I found a solution.

Have converted first the VMwareServer2 machine with "VMware Converter 3.0.2u1" and then converted again with "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client 5.0.0" adn loaded on my ESX1 5.0.0

It is runnig like a charme.

The solution in my case was to boot the VM up in VMware Workstation, update the VMware tools on the VM... then it would convert.

I was trying to convert from ESXI 5.0 to Infrastructure 2.0 (to be a temporary host while working on the ESXI machine) also using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client V5.0.0 and got this same message.  I had successfully done the exact same thing against a copy of the same VM (well, the same VM that had run for a day more, I make a copy of the running VM using a snapshot).   The Converter 5.0 release notes mentioned how this message could be from a VM that did not have a clean shutdown (flagged as [New] in the notes) and that the solution was to restart it and then shut it down cleanly.  I fired up my copy of the VM and then shut it down.  It then converted just fine.  Love the converter (so far).

Check if all the required pors are open and Use VMWare Converter version 4.0.1, it will work for sure.
